Dorothy Day Kellogg “Dot” Stewart passed away peacefully in her sleep at age 93.
Dorothy married businessman, A. Morgan Stewart, then a news reporter, and moved to North Stonington. They started their own real estate and insurance business and lived there for more than 30 years. Morgan and Dorothy shared interests in history and genealogy. They spent 40 years researching land records for the entire town of North Stonington and built up a unique and extensive collection of deeds, photographs, and maps. They owned the Stewart Mobile Home Gardens on Route 184 until retiring in the 1980s.
Dot, who was a direct descendent of Myles Standish, was a member of the Mayflower Society, a member and past regent of the Faith Trumbull Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution in Norwich, a member of the Denison Society, the Standish Society, the Knickerbocker Society, a life member of the Stewart clan, and was active in the North Stonington Historical Society.
Upon Morgan's retirement, the couple moved to Denison Hill Road in Clarks Falls, North Stonington. After Morgan passed away, Dorothy packed 114 rare books into her car and went to North Stonington Village to start the A. Morgan Stewart Memorial Library at the North Stonington Historical Society's Stephen Main Homestead. She donated maps of the burial grounds in North Stonington which locate 124 cemeteries. For 16 years, Dorothy served as a volunteer librarian at the library, which is open Tuesdays from 2 to 4 p.m. In recent times, Dorothy has lived in a retirement community on Hamilton Avenue in Norwich.
A celebration of Dorothy's life will take place at 11 a.m. on Monday, July 25, 2005, at First Hopkinton Cemetery, Hopkinton, R.I. There are no calling hours. Inquiries and cards may be sent to Margaret Van Patten, 295 Pendleton Hill Road, North Stonington CT 06359.
